Mongingia: Unraveling 30 Years of Community-Based Early Education

Produced Mongingia—meaning "teacher" in the Kadazan-Dusun language—a documentary chronicling three decades of community-led early childhood education in rural Sabah through PACOS Trust's Community Learning Centres (CLCs).

The film traces the origins of a grassroots movement born from a simple but urgent reality: many children in remote communities were entering primary school without the foundational skills needed to succeed. Faced with geographical barriers, limited resources, and unequal access to education, communities came together to create their own pathways for learning.

Through intimate stories of educators, parents, and former students, Mongingia explores how makeshift classrooms evolved into centres of hope, learning, and cultural preservation. Beyond literacy and numeracy, the CLCs nurture indigenous languages, traditional knowledge, local food practices, and community skills—ensuring that education remains deeply connected to identity and place.

The documentary highlights the often-unseen women who became teachers, mentors, and leaders despite having little formal training, as well as students whose lives were transformed through early intervention. Their stories reveal how education can become a powerful act of community self-determination, creating opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

At its core, Mongingia is a story of resilience—the belief that when communities are empowered to invest in their children, they can shape a future that honours both their heritage and their aspirations.
